Spirit Airlines

Research had me so shook and nervous to fly on Spirit Airlines, that I titled this post before I even flew on them! I was convinced that it was going to be a cheap airline, with picnic chairs as seats, and I would have to board the plane wearing all my clothes I planned to wear on vacation to save on my one free personal item I was allowed to bring on.

But Spirit Airlines ISN’T that bad. Matter of fact, let me take the ‘that’ off. It wasn’t bad.

My main concern was how I was going to pack everything I needed for a five day trip. Spirit allows customers to bring one personal item free and one carry-on item for a fee. But the gag is that personal items must fit entirely in the smaller sizer box, including handles and wheels. Any other personal item, or anything larger will be charged as a carry-on.

I was nervous after seeing the sizer box for the free personal item, but there was no one checking for it, really. If you have a duffel bag, you’ll be good to go.

weekender bag from Target

I bought a super cute weekender bag from Target that was perfect for this trip. I was able to fit everything I needed for a five day trip (well, actually more than I needed because I packed too much, as usual). And the bag could fit under the seat…a Spirit Airlines must for personal items.

All in all, it was a great flight. The plane was clean, and the staff were friendly and funny. Not too much I need more than that!

Tips for traveling on Spirit Airlines:

  • Save $10. Print your boarding passes at home or load them on your phone
  • Keep Calm and Carry-On. Pack everything in your “personal item” bag.
    • 16”x14”x12” (40x35x30cm) maximum personal item dimensions
      • Laptop Bag
      • Purse
      • Small Backpack
      • Weekender/Duffel Bag
  • If you must carry on a suitcase or an actual carry-on (not personal item), buy it online before you get to the airport
  • Bring a travel pillow – their seats don’t do the RockAway…they don’t lean back or recline in any form. You’ll be sitting straight up the entire time.
  • Hungry or thirsty? Buy something in the terminal to take on the flight with you. Spirit sells snacks, but if you want something hot that doesn’t come shrink wrapped, buy it and bring it on with you.
  • No Wi-Fi. So download your favorite show, movie, or read a book to pass the time.

I would definitely use them again in the future. Y’all know my motto: “I’ll try anything twice before I say I don’t like it!”

Have you been on Spirit Airlines? What did you think?

lol at “eventually”! I have heard some horror stories about them cancelling flights or delaying flights for basically forever. Hopefully it doesn’t happen to me, or to you (again) 🙂
